What Makes Your Home Special?

You have some ideas. You’ve seen HGTV, saved some Pinterest tabs, and watched a few YouTube videos. There are so many options on what to do.

Every project has unique considerations. You often have resources and constraints that hover in the peripheral and don’t reveal themselves until you’re in the middle of the project or already completed. Recognizing these type of constraints and resources are often the key to a project you will love for years to come.

Constraints

What gets in the way? What are the unique constraints to your project?

Budget is the obvious one. Sometimes it’s the weather, accessibility, time of the year, or season of life (e.g. new parents). There’s always at least one thing that’s going to be unique to you and your project.

What is it?

Resources

This is the most overlooked. We often have untapped resources at our disposal that get dismissed because we are so used to them just being around. In addition, YouTube and HGTV can never account for these.

Every property has a personality. What’s yours? Sometimes the stuff we see others do, just won’t work because it’s not the right fit.

Most of us have family items and keepsakes that we hang onto for years. Why? What is it about them that made you keep it? The items themselves or the people and places they represent are often clues to what gives you peace and joy. You can (and should) incorporate this into your vision.

Sometimes you will have a stack of old wood, “junk” in storage, or an uncle with access to a good deal on ________. Use these to your advantage. It gives your project meaning, often saves money, and helps tell your story.
